What is CMS, why you need CMS for your website?

CMS or WCMS (Web Content Management System) is one of the essential things that I mentioned in my previous post, that you need for bringing a website online. Not every website needs a CMS, but if you have a website that needs frequent update of the content, then you will need CMS to ease the update for you.

How does CMS allow ease of content update for your website?
CMS provides a visual editor or WYSIWYG editor, which does not require you to know any technical knowledge of HTML, to allow you add or update content and upload images etc. With the CMS you can then focus on adding and updating new contents into your website, without having to worry about maintaining the HTML coding of your web pages.

The following types of websites will mostly need a CMS for the ease of adding and maintaining contents

1. A blog or a news site which frequently needs update of the contents. There are many CMSes available for a blog or news site. The widely adopted by most blog sites is the WordPress, which also one that powers this blog and is free. Another blogging CMS that is also quite widely used and also free is the MovableType

2. A blog or news & event section of your company website. If you need a news or event section for your company website, you may consider a simple CMS or you can also use WordPress or MovableType to do so for you.

3. A web store – If your website deals with e-commerce, sells products and services online, you will need a CMS that at least does product cataloging for you for the ease of maintaining those products with nice images. Some CMS for e-commerce sites are MagentoCommerce, PrestaShop, Zen cart etc. These CMSes also include features such as shopping cart, payment gateway integration etc.
